The world has changed dynamically.
What used to be normal no longer exists and many people are faced with the fear of an uncertain future.
Perhaps you have wondered, “What does the future hold for me? Will my finances be okay? Will my family and friends be okay? Will I be okay?”
Although fear, particularly fear of the future, may seem real to you, fear is not actually something that is natural for us.
On the contrary, fear is something that we learn, often in the early childhood years and is perpetrated by the idea that fear protects and keeps us safe.
Imagine a young child playing on a playground, swinging on a swing. They are excited, exhilarated and having so much fun. Their heart is beating faster.
They are enjoying this playful moment and the sensations in their body when their mother looks at them and warns, “Don’t be afraid.”
Responses like this, even if motivated by a parent’s desire to keep their children safe, often cause a misinterpretation of the physical sensations of excitement as fear.
Often the result is that we stop living the playful adventure of life and shrink into the fear and anxiety that much of the world functions from.
Whatever you have decided you are afraid of, you are slave to.
Whether it is the fear of falling off a swing or the fear of what the future will bring, what you have decided you are afraid of becomes more powerful than you.
When you recognize that fear is stopping you, you can make a different choice and set yourself free.
These are my top 4 tips to go beyond the fear of the future:
1. My points of view are interesting
Our points of view make us a slave to the ordinary and they determine what can show up in our lives. If you desire to go beyond the fear of the future and have a life that is greater than ordinary, start by changing your points of view.
An easy way to accomplish that is to say to yourself, “Interesting point of view. I have that point of view.” for every point of view you have.
For example, if you are watching the news and you hear a story of how the economy is struggling and you find yourself buying into the point of view that you will run out of money, use this tool of ‘interesting point of view’.
What occurs when using this phrase is that the points of view that you are certain are right and true become simply interesting and when they are simply interesting, you can let them go and choose another.
2. Follow what is light
Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and they say something and you suddenly feel heavy? That is because everything that is not true for you creates a feeling of heaviness around you.
On the contrary, when someone says something and you suddenly feel light, that statement is what is true for you. Follow what is light for you, not what others say is true. YOU know for YOU.
3. Send it back!
Have you ever ordered something at a restaurant and had the wrong thing delivered? Perhaps you ordered a filet mignon and the server brought you a spinach salad.
When we receive what does not belong to us in a restaurant because it was not what we requested, we send it back. What if we did this with everything in our lives?
Did you know that 98% of the thoughts, feelings and emotions we have do not belong to us? Reality is, we are very aware of everyone and everything around us and we pick up on what is swirling around in their heads.
How many people are afraid of the future right now? How many people are worried about the future of those they care about? Just because you think those same thoughts does not mean they belong to you.
When you think a thought or feel a feeling, pause and ask, “Is this mine?” If you feel lighter when you ask, it’s not yours. Send it back!
4. Don’t try to be like everyone else. Be you!
When you start using the tools above, you will likely begin to discover that your perspective on the world and your future is very different from those around you. Many around you will say that It is normal to be afraid, that it is normal to worry about the future. Is that actually true for you?
Is your future really going to be worse? Do you actually desire to obsessively try and figure everything out ahead of time and have the right answers? Is that really enough for you? Or are you more into creating your life? Creating adventure?
If creating the adventure lights you up, start by getting clear on the future you would like to have.
Ask yourself, “What future am I aware of that I could create that is different from everyone else?” You don’t have to have words for this question.
When you ask you will perceive the energy of it. Start choosing towards that. It doesn’t have to be a big choice. It doesn’t have to be the right choice. Start with whatever choice is presenting itself to you and keep choosing.
This is how your life begins to show up as an adventure, filled with more joy, ease and possibilities than you may have ever imagined.
