Positive affirmations may not be something you have given much thought to in the past. But, whenever you think, you are affirming! Whenever you listen to your inner self-talk, you are affirming! On a daily, even hourly basis, you continually affirm your subconscious thoughts that will eventually become your beliefs.
What are Positive Affirmations?
Positive affirmations are simple phrases that can be quickly and easily learned, in fact, we probably all know at least one positive affirmation that has been around for decades.
“Every day in every way I am getting better and better.”
Remember that one?
It’s ages old but sums up what a positive affirmation is.
Positive affirmations are short positive statements used to rewrite or reprogramme your subconscious mind to overcome a negative area of your life.
For example, let’s say you have to make a presentation to some colleagues at work. The more you think about it, the more nervous you become. You can actually feel the palms of your hands getting hot and sweaty from just thinking of standing in front of your colleagues.
Subconscious mind Positive Affirmations
Your subconscious mind has taken these beliefs since your childhood days and developed them into the person you are today!
In living on autopilot, your subconscious reacts according to how it has been programmed by your thoughts and beliefs. In other words, your affirmations. This can, of course, be very useful. You don’t need to constantly stick your hand in a fire to know you will get burnt. You learned this early on, and your subconscious stored this information, so you don’t have to keep re-learning it.
That’s all very well and good! But what about other bits of information your subconscious stored that are no longer in your best interest.
You may have programmed your subconscious with information that is working against you now! Beliefs relating to money, health, your self-esteem, etc.
Is there a way to reprogramme your subconscious?
In a word, yes!
Positive affirmations are simple phrases that can be quickly and easily learned. In fact, we probably all know at least one positive affirmation that has been around for decades.
You want to confidently make a fantastic presentation, getting your points over clearly and professionally.
But, all you can think about is how awkward you will feel, how flustered and confused you will be, and how you’ll make a complete mess of the whole thing. And, if that’s what you’re thinking, and keep thinking it, that’s exactly what will happen!
But, to overcome this, you can create some affirmations of how you want the presentation to be. Something like this!
“I am full of confidence, I speak clearly, and my presentation is a huge success!”
Now you are affirming how you want the situation to be. For this to really take effect, you have to repeat the affirmations repeatedly as often as you can. Repetition is the key to success where positive affirmations are concerned.
How long are positive affirmations take to be effective?
That’s not an easy question to answer. Simply because it depends on what the positive affirmation is about and how deep-rooted your negative feeling is. Some positive affirmations will work quickly, and others will take more time.
For example, if you have had a fear of confined spaces since childhood, this may take longer to correct than if you simply freaked out slightly the last time you used a lift.
Remember that all affirmations will work effectively, but some will take longer than others.
If, when you say a positive affirmation, you feel a negative response building up, this could mean your subconscious is giving out some resistance.
If this is the case, it might take longer to overcome this belief. But, that isn’t too surprising when you consider that you have programmed your subconscious to not like confined spaces virtually all your life. Then for a couple of days, you have positively affirmed that you want them.
Your subconscious mind is bound to resist this new information purely from the aspect of self-preservation.
That said, though, it should not stop you from using positive affirmations in your life right now. For example, suppose it were to take six months for one particular positive affirmation to work. It stands to reason it will take even longer if you wait a couple of months before you start.
You might want to look at some affirmation exercises and tools to help speed things up a little.
What can I use Positive Affirmations for?
Positive affirmations can be used in virtually any area of your life. Everyone can benefit from using these affirmations, we all have areas in our lives that we want to improve.
Areas such as:
- Health
- Love
- Abundance
- Weight loss
- Career
- Self-esteem
- Happiness
Look at these examples of positive affirmations and choose the ones that could apply to you. Always remember to say your affirmations with emotion and passion. It is this emotion and passion that will help you penetrate your subconscious mind.
Positive affirmations for success
Can I create my own positive affirmations?
Yes, you can, and sometimes it’s better for you because you can adapt them to your situation and make them very personal.
I have found that when I create my own positive affirmations, it is best to keep them short and to the point. I also find that it’s best to make them rhyme, making them even easier to remember. The reason for this is simple. But, first, you need to constantly repeat these statements to yourself as often as possible, as I mentioned before.
It doesn’t help if your inner speech tells you that you can’t do something for fifteen hours of the day when you only spend two hours affirming that you can. It’s not so easy to do if the affirmation is a long speech. Similarly, when you realize that a negative thought has crept into your head, it is much easier to spout a short affirmation to counteract it.
Let’s take an example. Let’s say you are prone to procrastination! You may be at a point in your life where this is holding you back, and you want to overcome it.
You could use an affirmation such as:
“I have the attention span to always finish what I start and start what needs to be done.”
This affirms positively what you want to happen. But it’s a lot to remember, especially when the thought “oh, I’ll do it later” comes to mind.
A much better example would be:
“I’m having fun now that I’ve done the work.“
You can see that this positive statement is short and to the point, and the fact that it rhymes makes it much easier to remember.
Take a look at the two examples; which one seems easier to counteract the “oh, I’ll do it later” thought.
When writing your own positive affirmation, choose your words carefully. You should only use positive words in a positive affirmation. If you want a career change, telling yourself, “I need a new job,” will only strengthen the evidence that you really need a new job.
On the other hand, if you say, “I have my dream job,” your subconscious mind will have a positive image to deal with.
Don’t state in the future tense, but always in the present tense. “I will do my dream job” translates to “one day you will.” But “I have my dream job” is in the present tense, and your subconscious will make it so.
Remember, however, that you must say your affirmations with strong positive emotion and passion.
Add power and strength to your positive affirmations.
You can greatly speed up the process of your positive affirmations if you use them with visualizations. When you visualize the event you want to happen, repeat the corresponding affirmation over and over. In this way, you attack the situation on two fronts.
You can also write your affirmation on slips of paper or cards and leave them in prominent places in your home, such as on the refrigerator door, your closet door, or your wallet or purse. Anywhere you will see them regularly.
This idea is fantastic for the home, but you might get some strange looks and questions if you do it at your workplace.
If that’s the case, it’s a good idea to create a symbol or take a photo representing your desire. For example, a picture of your dream car taped to your note board at work may suddenly trigger the statement “I’m traveling far in my shiny new car” every time you see it, but it wouldn’t mean anything to anyone else who sees it.
The famous British television presenter, Noel Edmonds, used to draw a symbol of decrepitude on the back of his hand. Of course, it meant nothing to anyone else, but he knew its true meaning every time Noel saw it.
Write your affirmation in a notebook, filling a page with it, line by line. Complete as many lines as you can in the space of ten minutes. This will really help it sink into your subconscious.
Another great way to add power and strength to your affirmations is to say them while looking in the mirror.
Looking into your eyes while repeating your affirmations will give your message tremendous importance.
The most powerful and important messages you’ve ever received were delivered by people looking you in the eye, so it makes sense to do the same for yourself.
Have fun with your affirmations and self-suggestions, but most importantly, remember that they won’t be as effective without repetition, repetition, repetition!
And remember, “Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.”
